Why Pastors Need to Blog

Echoing Pastor John Wagner of Turning Point Community Church in Lubbock, Texas, several other successful Christian leaders have recently discussed the importance of maintaining a blog in order to connect with congregants and others hungry to hear the word of God. Through blogging, a minister can offer recommended readings to people throughout the world, thus helping spread the gospel far beyond the borders of one congregation. Pastor John Wagner maintains a long-standing focus on the importance of communication in pastoral work, and he has taught audiences in Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa.

Another reason for pastors to blog is that the practice constitutes an excellent outlet for the profession’s desire to highlight ideas through the power of the written word. A blog does not demand that a pastor think through a lengthy, detailed article. Instead, it offers the opportunity to share quickly and easily random thoughts inspired by a newspaper article or community event.

Staying connected to their own congregants, and to strangers who may be seeking inspiration and counsel, is another good reason for pastors to blog. A blog can become a visible manifestation of a church community’s ongoing dialogue and fellowship.
